Belarus journalist organization wins UNESCO’s press freedom award

Belarus journalist organization has won the UNESCO Award for Freedom of the Press.  The Belarusian Union of Journalists has been selected as a recipient of the UNESCO Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Award 2022. 

This is a $ 25,000 award for “a significant contribution to the advocacy or promotion of press freedom, especially in the face of danger.”. “For 25 years, the UNESCO / Giller Mocano Awards have drawn the world’s attention to the courage of journalists around the world who make many sacrifices in pursuit of truth and accountability. 

Again, we are Inspired by this example, I remembered the importance of ensuring that journalists everywhere have the right  to report freely and safely, “UNESCO Secretary Audre Azley said in a statement.

BAJ, a non-governmental organization of journalists, has been active in Belarus since 1995 and is the  largest NGO in the country with more than 1,300 members. He has won numerous prestigious awards for his advocacy of press freedom.

The  Supreme Court of the State ordered liquidation last August as part of the government’s unprecedented crackdown on an objection that seized control of the former Soviet state after months of massive protests.
