American ex-priest found guilty of sex abuse

An American ex-priest was found to be indulged in sexual activities where he was accused of sexually abusing orphaned and disadvantaged girls. All those young girls were under his care. East Timor was found guilty Tuesday.

He was sentenced to 12 years in prison in the first case of its kind in the staunchly Catholic nation.

Richard Daschbach, 84, was charged with child sexual assault, child pornography, and domestic violence after spending decades as a missionary in the country’s secluded enclave of Oecusse.

The trial started in the month of October but due to some particular reasons, it has been postponed numerous times. At the time of proceedings, the victims explained and complained about what they were going through during that time and explained threats and online attacks they got from the priest.

Richard Daschbach (C) 84, prepares to attend court online from Dili on June 9, 2021, as the beloved American ex-priest, is accused of molesting girls for years at an East Timor shelter in a case that has divided the predominantly Catholic country.

Former President Xanana Gusmao, who appeared in court on Tuesday, is among those who support Daschbach. East Timor is the most Catholic country outside of the Vatican, and Daschbach is remembered for his participation in the country’s independence struggle.
