1st time China opens embassy in Nicaragua

China has opened up an embassy on 31 December in  Nicaragua for the first time since 1990.

Foreign Minister Denis Moncada stated that the two countries had “ideological affinity.” Mr. Moncada also expressed gratitude to China for sending a million doses of Sinopharm’s coronavirus vaccine.

Mr. Ortega established diplomatic ties with China in 1985, but after losing the presidency in 1990, Nicaragua’s new president, Violeta Chamorro, recognized Taiwan.

On December 9, Nicaragua’s government severed ties with Taiwan, and this week it seized Taiwan’s old embassy and diplomatic premises, claiming they belonged to China. China’s new embassy, on the other hand, is located elsewhere, and it is unknown what will happen to the Taiwan building.
