Aung San Suu Kyi jailed for corruption

Aung San Suu Kyi has been under house arrest since the election-elected government was overthrown in a military coup in February 2021. The 76-year-old Nobel laureate has been charged with various crimes, including fraudulent voting.

Aung San Suu Kyi denied all claims and human rights groups accused the case of hypocrisy. Private hearings in the capital Naypyidaw were not open to the public and the media, and  Aung San Suu Kyi’s lawyer was banned from talking to journalists.

On Wednesday, a  court in the military government was found guilty of receiving a $ 600,000 (£ 477,000) bribe in cash and bullion from the former chief of Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city and region.  She was sentenced to five years in prison.

Her recent conviction extended her entire sentence to 11 years, as she had previously been convicted of other charges.

In December, she instigated resistance to the army and was convicted of violating Covid’s public health rules. In January, she had a walkie-talkie radio at her home and was convicted of violating Covid’s rules.

Aung San Suu Kyi also faces 10 other charges of corruption, each sentenced to up to 15 years in prison, and charged with fraudulent elections and violations of  the Official Secrets Act.
